Building a Dropbox or Google Drive integration isn’t in our plans right now – we take care to backup our own servers, and we already allow you to download basic backups in .csv format from the website. We’d much rather focus on improving core features.

And don’t worry: if Splitwise ever shuts down, we’ll notify all our users and give ample time for you to export your information :)

  2. Add more factors to the rental split calclulator? (parking & furnishing)

Couple factors I'd love to see on split wise rental calculator:

Parking spot (checkbox for that room)
Most places in LA will value a parking spot at about $50 a month

Furnishing the room (to be left checked off if a roommate is not furnishing the room at all)

This is one of the greatest room splitting calculators out there. I'd love to see it become more robust!

Glad you like the calculators! We’ve actually considered both the factors you mentioned, and unfortunately we chose to leave them off – both vary too widely in cost to be useful in a simple calculation.

They’re definitely reasonable things to take into account when splitting rent, though! You’ll just have to decide for yourself how much they’re worth and how you’d like to split them :)

  3. Option to prevent deletion of a expense / payment

Lock an expense / payment by the person who had made the payment
Note: Not the person who recorded the payment.

If locked, the entry can only be edited by the person who had made the payment.
A payment can only be locked by the person who had made the payment even if it was recorded by someone else.

We’ve previously decided not to “lock” expenses because we think it makes it too difficult for friends to fix mistakes in data that has been entered on Splitwise. However, there is an option in your user settings to receive a notification any time an expense is updated or deleted.

You can read more about our decision here: http://feedback.splitwise.com/knowledgebase/articles/89944-why-can-other-people-edit-or-delete-expenses-that-

  4. allow to choose participants when using unequal dividing with adjustments

In the old pop-up when doing an "unequal divide with adjustments" it was possible to keep people out from the bill. This is no longer possible with the new layout but was very handy.

We removed the checkboxes from that screen in an effort to simplify the add bill form. However, you can still add an adjusted bill that only involves some members of a group. On the main add bill screen, where it says “With you and:”, just delete the “All of Your Group” token and type in the names of the specific people you want to split with, and the adjustment form will update accordingly. Hope that helps!

  6. Make the new popup the same dark color scheme as the old one

Please make the new divide a bill popup the same color scheme as the old one. This one hurts my eyes. Otherwise the new pop up is great and I love that it is easy to add an image now

  7. Add a calendar for guests

Apart from splitting bills it would be very helpful to have a calendar that can be shared with members of the house. This way you could track guests. It might even make sense to offer the option to link expenses to those guests (while charging it to the roommate who invited the guest).

  8. Make bug reports searchable/commentable

This is totally "inside baseball," but I'm a dev geek, and I know you guys spend all kinds of time fixing bugs. I think it would be great if you could let users search existing bug reports (the way they can with features) to figure out if something's already been reported and maybe help you by adding more details to an existing report, and help you re-test if necessary.

Also, this product is AWESOME and I really appreciate all the effort that goes into making it and making it better!

    Quick update:

We don’t plan to make our bug reports searchable. Mostly this is because most of the reports that we keep not in UV forums are either security issues we’re in the middle of addressing or minor issues we’re keeping track of but not planning to fix urgently. in both of these cases, there’s not a lot of value (and some risk) in exposing these to everyone.

    Awesome idea, thanks Will!

We use Uservoice (this very thing I am using to speak to you now) to manage help tickets, feature suggestions, and the like. It’s true that when bugs are reported this way, only the articles and suggestions are searchable as part of the submission, so unless we publicly document the bug in our helpdesk you can’t find anything about it.

However, we kind of /like/ hearing 10 times about the same bug because then we know we…

  9. Deleting a bill

    Hi Vishal,

We do want to give people confidence that their bills have not been deleted, so in the user settings we have an “email me anytime someone updated / edits / deletes a bill.” We plan to change the default setting to alert you anytime a bill you created is deleted, which I think should give you some more confidence.

We strongly believe anyone should be able to delete a bill in order to help correct mistakes and make things simple and complexity-free.

The currency issue you are referring to can also be fixed in user settings – there is a button on the website that allows you to convert all expenses you have so far into your default currency (it just sets the currency code, it doesn’t do any currency exchange.)

    I hope this helps!

    Cheers,
    Jon

  10. Make the person who created the expense the only one who can delete it

It happened to me, someone deleted an expense and it didn't even give me a notification. And there is no history that I know of, so I could not restore.

    Hi there,

The checkboxes are still there – if you click on “split equally” you can check anyone you like.

We’re sorry this adds an additional click to see the checkboxes, but it makes the form so much simpler for new users, and it’s easier on the eyes (in our opinion).

    Hope this helps!

  13. Changes in splitwise interface

I see that you have changed the splitwise interface.
The old interface was very easy to use.
The new one however has errors and is very complicated compared to the old version.

  14. When adding a bill, the people with whom you are splitting should be visible on the the same window

You should not need to click on any button to view the people you are sharing the bill with.

Hey Sanal – with the new form, you can still see the list of involved people at the top of the window (“With you and:”), or as you mentioned, you can click the “split equally” link for something more similar to the old view.

We found that for most users and most bills, including the list of individual users who owe was unnecessary – it was infrequently used, and it just made the form more complicated. That’s why we decided to hide it behind a click in the new form design. Sorry for the inconvenience!

  15. Let Paypal handle money limits

It says I can't transfer more than $500 via paypal. However, paypal has limits on a per user basis based on how verified their account is. I don't have limits do therefore paywise is limiting me unfairly. I can't use your app to record a payment then.

This is a limit imposed by PayPal, not us. Their API limits third-party applications to send a maximum of $500 per week per user.

If you’d like to send larger amounts of money via PayPal, you can always transfer the money directly from PayPal.com, and then record that payment here on Splitwise. Sorry for the inconvenience!

  16. Itemised bill with unequal sharing

    Hi,
Currently when we divide a bill in itemised mode, the shares are put up equally for each participant, but it is not the case always.

We also need an option to unequally split inside an itemised bill. Can you address that?

We don’t have plans to add unequal shares to itemized billing – it’s a pretty uncommon case, and we haven’t been able to come up with an interface for it that we consider “good enough”.

If you’d like to include unequally split items, you can try adding them as individual expenses, separate from the itemized bill. I realize that’s not ideal, though. Sorry for the trouble!

  17. Keep the old "add a bill" design

It takes much longer to add an expense if the bill is not split...if one person is covering another person entirely, it takes too long to add.

  18. consider that the rent bill should be able to not be simplified with the rest of the bills

When living with a group of people, it is common that one person pays the entire group's rent, and the other members pay their share to the one. We do not put rent on splitwise because splitwise simplifies rent, along with the rest of the expenses (the whole point of the website pretty much), but since rent is such a large bill, the one who fronts the rent wants that exact reimbursement in an account devoted to paying rent, therefore he does not want rent to be lumped into the other debts.

In other words, give the option to set…

This is definitely a legitimate problem, but it’s not one we’re planning to solve in the near future. Right now we’re making an active effort to simplify Splitwise, and adding a new special option to recurring bills doesn’t quite fit with that plan.

For now, if you’d like to treat rent like a separate account, it’s probably best to actually handle it that way, either with a separate Splitwise group or offline. Sorry for the trouble!

  19. create a way to settle expenses between specific members of a group

I think it would be great if you could create a way to settle expenses between certain people in a group, not everybody in a group. That was something we had when we used Billmonk - you could choose who to settle the bills with. For example, suppose that person A owes person B, and C owes A. When person C needs to settle with A, they end up needing to pay back person B. In the current group set-up, if person B doesn't really know or have contact with person C, it makes it more complicated to facilitate payment.

Hey Song-My – it sounds like you’re using a group with “debt simplification” turned on. If you turn simplified debts off, the group should function just the way you’re describing (e.g. if A owes B and C owes A, that will NOT be simplified down to “C owes B”).

You can turn off simplified debts from the web by clicking “More details” next to your balance summary to bring up the details for your full group. Then click the “Simplify debt?” toggle in the upper-right to turn off auto-simplification.

And if I’ve misunderstood your suggestion and you’d actually like a different feature, let us know! :)

  20. Drag and Drop Reordering

Hi! I have a suggestion for making organization easier. I want to be able to drap and drop my individual financial items into the order I want. They automatically display chronologically based on when I enter them, but I can't seem to reorder them how I want. So if I enter something in a non-chronological order, it has to stay that way. At least as far as I can tell. It would be really awesome if I could just reorder them by dragging and dropping them to the order I want them in. Thank you for your attention and consideration.

I’m afraid we don’t have plans to support reordering in the near future :( We’ve found that chronological order is the easiest way for most people to review their past expenses, and right now we’re focused on doing one thing at a time right, rather than supporting many different options. Sorry!
