I can see how this would be a huge help for people who have many friends with the same name who refuse to add their last name to their accounts! This isn’t on our roadmap yet, but it’s something we’ll consider in the future.

adding a nickname for people would be helpful that way you arent changing their actual name. It would be especially helpful for things like Landlord, Roommate, Ex Husband.

We aren’t planing to add support for custom categories in the near future. We’re considering better ways to allow people to sort expenses into categories other than the ones we’ve provided. In the meantime, if there are particular important categories you feel are missing, feel free to email us with a suggestion at support@splitwise.com.

Child related expenses are needed. Such as Childcare, Tuition, Child Support Activities or Extracurricular (to cover sports and kids classes)

Applying payments directly to an expense definitely makes sense, and it’s a feature we’ve thought about for years, but unfortunately we haven’t found a great way to do it, even with a lot of thought. It’s difficult to support both rolling balances and item-by-item checklists on the same list of expenses – especially when different people might want to use both “settle up” styles within the same group. We also haven’t been able to find a design for applying payments directly to expenses without adding a lot of complexity, especially if paying for specific expenses is an “optional” feature and not the default.

We do continue to think about this, so hopefully we’ll make a breakthrough at some point, but it hasn’t yet made it on to our official roadmap. We’re really sorry for the inconvenience! For now, one possible solution would be to add comments on expenses, which can…

A suggestion to this issue could be to strikethrough all expenses that have been paid for when settling up. That would be helpful for those who dont pay the full amount but want to show what has been paid for at that time.

Add an icon on the main page or when clicking on individual items to show paid expenses or just change the expenses that are paid to be a lighter color such as grey or strikethrough the text to show it was previously paid. For those that enter in expenses early such as the Electric bill that is due in 2 weeks it can get confusing when it gets paid for early since the "person paid $ on this date" shows up before that item is actually due so it looks like it wasnt paid yet.

Great idea for a new category/categories! Thank you for sharing. The next time we review our categories this will definitely be in the list for consideration. Childcare expenses are becoming a common use case for Splitwise.

            HeatherHeather commented  ·

We need categories for children related expenses such as Childcare (would work for daycare, babysitter, and after school care), Preschool, Tuition, Toys, Books (this would be good for older kids), Clothing, Child Support etc. These additional categories would be especially helpful for those trying to co-parent their children through separation, divorce, or whatever means.
