Thanks for suggesting UPI as a payment method. We’re looking into UPI, and would like to know your thoughts on how you’d like Splitwise to support UPI:
- Integrate with a UPI app like BHIM or PhonePe
- Integrate with your banking app
- Let you send money to a virtual address, phone #, or IFSC from within Splitwise
- Something else? Please let us know in the comments!

UPI is a framework, so it doesn't matter which 'app' it can be integrated with. I don't know how exactly but what the team would need to do is integrate the UPI framework & not any specific app. How it works in India is whenever you'd have to do any payment, the UPI framework in any app (let's say food delivery) allowed the user to <choose> any installed UPI app which can be anyone (PhonePe, BHIM, Paytm, Bank's app, Google Pay etc) & just pay using whatever app is installed. So you'd only need to implement the framework which let's people choose the UPI app as a payment mode.
It'd be similar to how you've implemented Paytm. Here, instead of mobile number, the user will have to enter UPI ID(best method, not mobile number or IFSC) of the friend like (username@bankname) & instead of the Paytm app opening, it would open whatever UPI app the phone has & choose to send the payment using that. You can visit npci.org.in to understand it better.
Even Paytm, one of the payment market leaders has introduced split bill feature but their app is shit & people are moving on from them. If Splitwise manages to not only introduce UPI as a payment method but also make it an integrated payment app with UPI just how WhatsApp has done, it will definitely be a game changer.
Since UPI is cross platform, people just want to have one UPI app which is the best one to scan QR & pay at shops, send money to friends. Splitwise's USP would be giving an ability to split bills which would make it amazing than others. Look at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.godutchapp which is doing that.
