Add friends without email address or phone number
I know that it might be a user acquisition choice, but it is very annoying to not be able to add someone with just their name (i.e. with no email address or phone, so that they don't receive an invite).
I find that the user experience is affected a lot by this and I am switch back to another app because of this despite how good splitwise is overall.
There are indeed several use cases where I would like to add people without contact details:
- At a specific event, for example a party where I need to enter the names of a lot of people without knowing their email adress
- To track my own personal debts with other people without them knowing or them receiving an invitation.
I did read this article by the way, but I wanted to share the way I think:
http://feedback.splitwise.com/knowledgebase/articles/206028-why-do-i-have-to-add-friends-in-order-to-use-split
Thanks for the detailed feedback – it’s always useful to hear, and I’ll pass it on :)
One small feature you may not be aware of: on our website, Splitwise does allow you to add group members without email addresses, which hopefully helps for the “large party” scenario. My apologies that the same feature isn’t available on our mobile apps!

Hi,
I know this is repeated question and I've read through your justification for choosing this process. I am forced to write this to you because there is no better app in the market that helps split bills better.
The only add-on I would like to propose is to create users with their email Id or phone number but not send an immediate notification to that user. Many a times we'd like to make a quick note of the expenses but not notify participants immediately.
Not all people are happy with getting a notification to payback soon after a party. Please let me know of your thoughts as well...Cheers...

the idea is an "unlocked" version that will allow you to add friends without needing to add email addresses or invitations

On the web, it is possible to create a group and add friends without adding their email address.
This seems not possible on mobile Android app. Is it possible to add this capability on Android mobile app?
Thanks -

It would be a lot easier if one could use it with virtual friends before using it for real. Otherwise your friends will get emails while you are trying it

I'm looking to use this as an easier and more suitable tool than a calculator for keeping track of debts I owe or are owed to me, and needing to have other people invited is kind of annoying.

Hi,
For some trip it could be useful to allow the creation of "fake" accounts for people that don't want this app.For example we've been for a trip and we were 12, I couldn't use splitwise.com because it would said send an invitation for each people then we have use Tricount that does not need any account creation or invitation, and allow to easily create a people entry for the group.
Didn't found any suggestions like this, but be free to merge it if so.
Thanks for reading :)

I want to be able to find friends by name or email. NOT send them an email and they must accept. Can we search internally (in splitwise) before sending an email?

Adding User without email-ID on mobile(lets say temporarily, till I can get his/her mail ID) Its possible in web GUI but not in Mobile App where I necessarily need to put in email/phone number.
Can we have that option in mobile as well. -

As of now only the friends with email can be in a group of expenses. So can a custom friend be added in order to add people who are not directly participating in the application? However myself or any of the group friend can update their expense.
This happens if a person does not have an email ID. -

Could you be made available for the Pro accounts for start. And see how it works out.

I had the same idea last night as it wasn't possible for the other friend to download the app at the time. To take this further, once the person downloads the app then it should be possible to identify that person and merge the expenses.

I want my friends that don't want to get an account with splitwise to be able to be on my groups.

I love splitwise, but when I'm out lunching with boss and I owe them money from splitting lunch, it's kinda of awkward to get splitwise invitations sent to them.
SO I hope that you will allow me to add people without email/handphone address. Sometimes, I just need to note down the money and splitwise is a great service for keeping track.

You're not handling my real world use case for payments yet:
You make the case that all participants ought to have an email to be able to log in and see the bill. But that fails to account for many people in my life - elderly aunt, lazy friend/cousin, etc who will participate and pay but will fail to promptly create an account on this website just so the bill will be calculated correctly. They just want me to tell them what they owe.
Let me specify anonymous or self-labeled payees who aren't going to log in. If they are willing to create an account later I can remove their placeholder and replace it with their account. But some of them will never do that.

You can add people to groups without email addresses only on the website.

Actually, I found a faster way:
Just enter the name of the person you want to add and use any fake username at mailinator.com (e.g. fshg4958430584@mailinator.com). And you're done, no hassle.

I agree, this is pretty bad. If you can create a group where not everyone has an email, why can't you add additional people to the group withtout sending an invitation? What this does is force me to re-create the group from scratch when I realize that I forgot a person. That's frustrating. You said you were considering making emails optional a year ago. Did you come to a conclusion?

I also wish we could add friends without email. I've started looking for a different app because it's difficult to enter an email for every person I'm splitting something with.

I really want to add someone without the persons email. Like my mom or a child. Not everyone uses email, but everyone have bills. :)
