Apply payment directly to expense/pay for individual items
When a payment is made, you should be able to select the associated expense(s) & enter a $ amount to which expense the payment should be applied to.
An update: we’re still not planning to add the concept of a payment for a specific bill or a specific expense. We’ve left this idea under review for many years, but we’re not convinced it’s the right idea for Splitwise. We think focusing on a total balance makes things simpler in most cases. This is also how a bank balance works.
Here’s two potential work-arounds if you’re not satisfied:
1. Let’s say you want to set things up so you can see if people have specifically paid for a certain bill, or for a certain month of expenses. You can create a group just for that bill or month – then, when viewing that group, you will only see balances owed from that specific bill or set of bills.
2. Once you pay an amount and want to keep track of it being for a certain bill, you could use a comment on the payment and the expense. This would allow you to note down your intentions.
Also, since this request was added, we’ve added the following feature: if you ever /fully/ settle up with a friend or group, we automatically hide all bills before that time behind a tap or click to make things cleaner. This way, you generally can see only which bills specifically are affecting the group or friendship balance. (If things have been only partially settled, we leave everything visible.)
If you’d like to share more about why this feature is important to you, or why these workarounds are not sufficient, we always appreciate specific feedback so we can understand how it could help you specifically. For this reason, we’ll leave the request “under review”

I completely agree with other users that it would be great to be able to mark a single expense within a group bill as paid rather than having to mark the whole bill as paid.
My partner and I have an ongoing bill for utilities, and household expenses, sometimes they pay me back in partial amounts. It would be great to just be able to mark a partial payment of a line item.

I list all bills for my roommates. they sometimes pay the bills individually as we go instead of all at once. currently I just put in how much they paid manually, but it'd be nice to mark a single expense as "settled up". Then make the expense hide because it's settled up. basically I'd like to be able to mark expenses as settled up individually. if this is possible already I haven't found it

As many user says, this feature is needed
This apps is not a bank account where in an out cash doesn't need a lot of information except title and maybe "Add note" like Tangerine bank apps do. This apps is but more like an accounting software, as for exemple "Acomba" and if a software very used in a lot of compagnie in Canada, this option should exist. In the software there a "account sold" with in an out but i can say wich bill aren't pay...Here the solution, and i think it respect the way you already do it (big total balance)
Add a third option "Pay selected item", then bring a menu with multiple selection (checkbox, sqare or round). Then with each selected item, the total get upper (the sum). Then, 2 choices : Apply paiement or Cancel. You then enter the already "settle amount with.. " and "who receive money". Then for each selected (and paid) item there an icon.
This is something very easy to impland. Why this is great : in a case where there a lot of transaction, the sold get higher and in some case, i might not agree with some "share part", or i made some big transaction and i want to pay those exact bill without checking the details of all the other.
I will made a separate suggestion, but there should be a "to review" flag/star or any other icon, if i want to review those or if me or someone want to talk about this transaction
PS : Sorry, i use the french version

The expenses and payments made are displayed continuously. It looks too cluttered. Instead of displaying all the new expenses and settlements made in a single window, only the expenses can be listed out and settlements can be viewed inside the expense entry.

Adding a request for being able to apply money to a specific expense within a group. This makes tracking very difficult

It would be very helpful if you could settle different expenses separately instead it all being added to a pool. When there's money left that is still owed it makes it difficult to track down where that amount still owed is coming from.

Hi,
Lets say x has paid for y.
Hotel 500, bus 300, auto 150
Y or X should have an option to settleup expenses by bus, hotel or auto.
Example: y has paid only for bus which is 300rs there at the expense mentioned he should have an option to settleup for bus.
This would improve user experiance. -

Definitely desperately want this feature. I cannot see how it's a big issue to implement at all. Besides my own use case, there are dozens under me that are extremely valid I haven't even thought of. I was baffled when I went looking for this feature and found this post instead.

For example if the person sent me amount for pizza transaction. Then I can simply click the green button on that particular pizza transaction. So that I can understand that he paid for that.

WOW this thread is truly remarkable. I'm a 20 year software developer at one of the Big 4 global software companies. I currently run an app team responsible for a very public-facing application. If I told my boss that my end-users have been asking for a feature for YEARS but my response to the is "eh, WE don't think you need that feature," I'd be fired. What planet do you come from where you think this is a good way to run a software company? Do you realize that you can and will be a forgotten memory literally overnight when a better app is discovered by your users? Furthermore, HOW is it possible that this painfully obvious feature was not the FIRST thought during your initial product meetings?!?
Use case: A friend owes me $1,000 on the first of ever month for rent. We go out to dinner and he pays. He sets up a bill where I owe him $100 for dinner. Your unusable app now says that HE owes me $900 and there is no way for me to "settle up" with him and pay the $100. Instead I'm supposed to act like a bank and let his debt be chiseled away at until the first of the month when he will have to send me the balance of the initial $1,000? That's absurd. What if he needs the $100 NOW?
Clearly anyone should be able to settle up any time they want on any single bill. A simple list of bills with check boxes would be fine. Would you like me to show you how to do it? I work as a consultant. I'll write the code for you in a day. Until then I will personally be using an app from one of your competitors and I suggest others do the same.

Pretty poor that you don't allow for a direct bill settlement. It would be much more beneficial to be able to close off one payment at a time as opposed to an entire total deduction

It would be a good function if you could attach a settlement of payment to a particular expense when someone owes you money for several different transactions. So that it could show you a running count of what is left of that expense to be paid.

Sometimes it’s useful to see the list of things one individual has paid to simply check if something has been missed.

Yes this feature will help to make your app stand ahead of other expense app since your app already is very smooth and simple to understand and so elegantly made.
I know you want to make the app simple by not providing the individual expense check off option in the sub group of a particular main group but if you think a little this feature is very important for countries like India, may be China too as Asian countries are populated so more it is diverse with various preference and many other ways to repay the due, so nobody comes to lender all of a sudden to repay the total amount. They will repay slowly slowly so keeping track of how much he repayed and of what expense and keeping track of how much is total left is both important.I don't know wether I was able to convince you or not, and whether is it right thing to do, but yes it is very important thing needed.
The idea of bank cannot be given as it is different from the way we people keep track of petty expenses.
May be, you never felt the need of this option at your location but in India managing such petty expenses is really and to create a product according to requirement of people over here is very complex . Here people comes up at any moment telling I will clear the previous due right now(which was borrowed long time back) and requests to keep the current due within some time.
This creates a necessity of such addition of settle up option in expense subgroup beacuse
1. At one point of time I also want to keep track of how much of total due a person have with me in current date( including the previous money lended)
2. + I would also like to keep track of which small small dues have been cleared from previous to current date.
3. Suppose in 1 Expense Group total summation of due is 1500$.
In this group two sub group is there Expendi2 and Expendi3.
Expendi1 have due 50$
Expendi2 have due 1450$Total is 1500$
Now Expendi1 comes to return 50$. So I can't settle up until Expendi2 comes with 1450$. So if I was able to settle that particular Expendi1 50$ then automatically it will update to 1 Expense Group that it is still have 1450$ due to be recovered from this group notifying the group's due and sub group's due.
Altogether your app will have all in one, giving a track of who and who paid the due and how much due is pending from individual perspective + group perspective.
I love installing apps and give feedback because I believe app should give maximum advantage to the people without limitation.
Since I have tried all app and your app is the best I have seen in splitting expenses so you don't know what potential your app have .
It is totally up to you whether you can integrate that changes or not, it's totally up to you, since in India we have huge population so the acceptance of masses matters for the app to be successful
Great product guys.

Please allow payment of specific charges!! It makes it so much easier to keep track of what you’ve already taken care of and what you still need to especially when the group is large and complicated like when five people go on a trip abroad. Your workaround of adding comments or making separate groups adds way too much clutter and confusion with larger groups and the point of this app is to be able to clearly and easily pay what you owe to ppl. I understand for some people it might be simpler to keep the total balance but for others it really isn’t and it seems like a waste and a shame to not add the option for those who really want it in favor of those who might not need it because those ppl can happily ignore that feature. I think this app is great but not having the ability to pay for specific charges is a real deal breaker to me and almost makes this app not worth using. I strongly hope you consider changing that, please!!!
