Multiple currencies
implement multiple currencies, so splitwise (site and/or app) can be used when we’re on vacation? That way, our expenses can be in euros, or pounds, but the payback can be in your local currency. I’d like this on the site, as well as on any app. Thanks.
Multiple currencies are now fully supported on web, iPhone, and Android. You can change your default currency at any time from your account settings page, or you can change the currency for an individual expense by clicking on the currency symbol in the “Add bill” or “Settle up” form.

Definitely a killer feature... so for a "trip" that crosses multiple currencies be able to summarise the net of all currency spends... so as an example, for UK trip to Thailand, be able to summarise total trip in uk sterling. You'd need somewhere to capture the pound to baht currency rate

Hi,
First of all, I must say the app is EXCELLENT!
Idea - we are planning to go to Hongkong and have friends from multiple countries. Some may have US dollars and may pay up bills where US dollars are accepted in HK.
Can you put a multi current feature in the app?

Sometimes we travel in different countries thus have expenses in different currencies. For example US dollars and Singapure dollars at the same time.
It would be wonderful if there was a converter added. -

Hey guys, since I also needed this option I've created an app that allows you to convert the currencies.
Here are the steps required:
- Go to this url: http://splitwise.wol.ph/
- Authenticate using Splitwise
- Click on the "Unify Currencies" button
- Check the currencies you want to convert and optionally change the exchange rate
- Press the "Convert" buttonNow everything will be converted in the background, just check your splitwise page to see the results.
Note that it doesn't fully support Split payments yet due to rounding problems when converting currencies. -

Please add the convert option in the app.

Any way we can automatically convert an expense from one currency to another so we can know the total balance in a single currency (rather than split between currencies)?

We are 3 friends planing a trip to Asia. 5 countries, 5 different currencies.
It'd be nice to add all the expenses in Thai Baht, Ringgit, Riel or whatever and let the app to work out the exchange rate (either get them from google or previously set up by the user) to EUR.

Hi, i'm the original submitter of the idea, and my vision was not just to be able to change the currency symbol, but to actually get a currency rate calculation so that if I owe 10USD, it will be marked as "you owe 54.60DKK". For inspiration take a look at the "Payback" app which allows you to set a "standard" currency, and then convert every expense (from multiple currencies) to that standard currency. So when on vacation, I can split the bill in EUR, and Splitwise tells me how many DKK I owe.

We have thought about adding Bitcoin, beers, and that sort of thing. Personally, I would really like to. We just want to make sure it doesn't crash any devices (custom currencies introduce potential bugs in the way the phones render things).

Please allow user-defined currencies : they might be USD, EUR, other "real world" currency, Bitcoins or event-specific tickets/currency ( like in music festivals where you buy plastic coins )

I would love to see Bitcoin as one of these multiple currencies!

We still need to be able to convert the expenses in the default currency.
As said by Kristan, it would be best to use the fixing fx rate of the input date to convert back to default currency (COB doesn't apply since FX market is 24/5). -

It'd be great to either pay back in the local currency as implemented OR convert amounts to the default currency on the day they were entered (say via bank rates at COB). Currently (6//9/2013), the convert all amounts to USD feature under Account Settings just transcribed 1->1 so that 1000 ILS became $1000 and 50 EUR became $50.
Thanks! Kristan

The way it is added in 3.0 is not as the user mentioned, since conversion rates are not applied. We want to pay back in our local currency, not in the holiday-currency.
Now it says "you owe John 50 euros, 1000 CNY and 300 USD." Now if I pay something in euro's for John the other amount will stay there till I pay something in CNY or USD.. -

+1! Love the app and this feature would make it much more useful.

+1 for this. I'd like to see multiple currencies per friend, if applicable. Splitwise doesn't have to worry about the conversion rates etc., we can decide that when we settle up. You can choose to shuffle only same currency bills or converted by the user.

right now I use the iphone app "Payback". Its incredibly useful and can easily add multiple currencies while on a trip, and then calculate a base currency for paying as well as splitting up the payments of who owes how much to whom. Just add every expense to the app specifying the currency and it takes care of the rest.

Same issue here. We currently handle this by having various groups in various currencies - this obviously isn't ideal.
Would be great if in each expense/bill we could specify the currency and eventually convert to the groups 'base' currency at a FX rate of our choice.
