use OCR on receipt picture to itemize expenses

Splitwise Pro includes the ability to scan and itemize receipts from our mobile apps. You can find the option to scan a receipt when tapping the camera icon on the add expense form.
You can sign up for Pro in our apps by going to the Account tab in iOS or the top left menu on Android, or by going directly to https://secure.splitwise.com/pro/subscribe.

This would be awesome. I use an app called Tab, which does only OCR + splitting, and then flip back and forth to add it to Splitwise. Integration would be super, but Tab is already a big improvement.

your current receipt picture functionality ate first page of my reciept... I scanned one page and today I shredded it... merrily scanned the second page today which I had forgotten to scan previously so I could shred that one too... and the first one is gone... the app doesn't warn you that your previously saved pic would be gone... there are multipage receipts in many cases so you should at least warn new users (or all users) if the app can only keep one pic at a time ... I tried to get to my web account but I had forgotten the password so I had to turn my phone on to get the reset code and that sync'd the app... aren't technology use cases great?

I was just about to add this idea when I saw Matt's post.
Any news on this?

My friends and I often make weekly trips to the supermarket and quite often our bills are not separated. I use the itemized bill entry option on the web app for now, but if there was a way to pre-load these items by taking a picture of this bill or scanning it (using OCR, perhaps), it would definitely make life a whole lot easier. I know that some supermarkets have a bar code on every bill and they can retrieve the bills directly on to their systems using this bar code. May be you could use a similar method for retrieving bills from the supermarket directly (not sure if this is really possible though).
In any case, it's a great app you guys have made, and I have had all my friends using it to split any expense.

There's an app now called Tab (free) that uses OCR. Sure it may add a few more itemized lines, but the app allows you to delete these line items with a swipe. I hope to see this feature in Splitwise soon, because I hate switching between multiple apps.

Given the quality of receipts (low ink, bad paper, crumbled paper ...), I doubt this would ever be feasible... It might be cheaper just to make a deal with some Chinese firm to do manual OCR ... :P
