Kill the Hamburger Menu
I would like to see a better navigation method than a side menu. There is a ton of resources out there explaining why it's a bad idea to do it this way. I also think in the case of Splitwise it makes the app a little bit confusing, partially, because it contains redundant information (friend list).
For iOS at least you could go with a tab bar or maybe do it completely hierarchical.
I know this sounds like a minor thing and a matter of taste. But I do care about good interfaces and using an app is about how convenient it is. So I would appreciate some development here.

The reason a hamburger menu is bad is because a) people don’t know what it is and b) it’s slow to use if you need it. The current design of the app is based on our most common use patterns and in those cases, the only thing you need the hamburger for are notifications – which should really be badging specific people and items anyways.
Try using the app without ever hitting the hamburger menu and let us know what feels like is missing (beyond notifications). The core home screen is actually designed to give complete access to just about everything.
I’m declining it because this ticket isn’t quite specific enough to be actionable on our end. I’m very happy to hear feedback like “I was trying to accomplish X and it felt really hard to do”. I don’t know what you would consider better in this case. I could just remove the hamburger menu and make the + button add expenses, groups and friends, but I’m not sure you would prefer that. I know I like the sing epurpose + button myself.

Thanks for the response. It's ok that you don't view this as a todo. It's meant as a general feedback. I couldn't figure out a different way than making it an idea.
But since you asked for more precise information where the confusion comes from, here's what I'm missing:
The main Problem is that it's hard for me to tell whether I'm viewing a group, a person or the overview. This is because I can pick a person in the side menu and also on the home screen, however a back button is only present in one case. The same goes for groups. I know there is a title on each page, it always takes a few seconds to realize though.
A suggestion here would be (but might not be the only or best solution) to use a tab bar, which highlights very obvious where I am at any moment or maybe even better, use "named back buttons", so you always know where it takes you.A related problem is, that inside a group you have a summary how much you owe whom (but only within that group), which I think is missing the point of a group. At least I only use it to assign expenses. I want to know what I owe to somebody in total, not only for a specific purpose. This has caused actual confusion between others and me. My suggestion would be to make the summary in groups more like a saldo (Person A +500 Person B -100 ...) so it differentiates from the global summary.
In the end this all is about the navigation style. If it was super obvious where you are at any time there would be no confusion about who owes how much. And that is what the app is about, isn't it?
I'm mostly complaining here and not giving you perfect solutions, but I wanted to let you know what bugs me when using your app.Keep up the good work!
