IOUs to people with out email or phone number
Whilst I understand the rationale of entering email ID / phone number for your friend on splitwise, there are cases where you meet a bunch of friends + one random person. In this case, I am sure to onboard all my friends to splitwise, however because I can't add a person (that I barely know) without email ID, I cannot spit the bill easily. I now need to calculate the bill outside splitwise and create entries per splitwise contact
This is a totally reasonable request. We used to support this, but found that is caused a lot more problems than it solved. If you really need to do this, you can add a friend as anything@example.com and it will let you create a dummy account (any prefix at the @example.com suffix will create an account without a real email address).

I have used splitwise for 3 years, including for group travel usage. I am now in the situation that I need one ghost user within a group who does not wish to use the app. I hoped there would be a solution to this oversight, but it does not appear so. Please create this option!

I just discovered splipwise a few months back. Love the app. But yet, this issue isn't resolved and the inability to add arbitrary frinds without email or nto being able to change a user's email make the app far less appealing.

I agree with the previous poster's comment about splitwise's strategy to get me to hand over friend's emails. big turn off.

You do realize that having a workaround like that worsens the experience, let's say I add my dad with the @example.com solution, then I show the app to him and he wants to use it. Now I have two "friends" that are my dad and I can't merge them, losing all the expenses tracking.
You should enable the option to add friends without email and being able to link them to an email if the person starts using the app.
Not letting people create friends without email will definitely make people go away more than it will make us invite our friends.
