Allow an option for "Payment Pending"
Often, my friends will send me checks as a form of payment. It would be useful if you were able to mark a payment as Pending as a middle ground between paid and unpaid.
2 votesThanks for the idea – we used to do just that! In Splitwise’s first beta, all payments were marked as pending, and the payee could click when they had actually deposited the check or confirmed they got the cash. But it seemed to confuse a lot of people. We aren’t planning to add this back in at the moment, but I can see why you’d want it and we’ll keep your suggestion in mind.

Allow custom categories
User defined categories that do not fit into default categories
669 votesWe aren’t planing to add support for custom categories in the near future. We’re considering better ways to allow people to sort expenses into categories other than the ones we’ve provided. In the meantime, if there are particular important categories you feel are missing, feel free to email us with a suggestion at support@splitwise.com.

Allow reoccurring expenses to post automatically or earlier than the max of 7 days before it's due
If bill is reoccurring, it should automatically be posted on each future due date. Or just add the option to post it 14 or 30 days in advance, not just the current max option of 7 days. Most people are paid biweekly or monthly and have to budget for bills further out than 7 days. Plus, if bill is reoccurring, we should be able to see it every month. Ex: Monthly mortgage is $1000. It is June 2012 and I'm looking at November 2012 expenses...I should automatically see all reoccurring expenses, such as the $1000 mortgage, that fall in that…
13 votesGreat suggestions :) The recurring bill system could definitely use an update – we’ll discuss at our next team meeting.

Apply payment directly to expense/pay for individual items
When a payment is made, you should be able to select the associated expense(s) & enter a $ amount to which expense the payment should be applied to.
985 votesAn update: we’re still not planning to add the concept of a payment for a specific bill or a specific expense. We’ve left this idea under review for many years, but we’re not convinced it’s the right idea for Splitwise. We think focusing on a total balance makes things simpler in most cases. This is also how a bank balance works.
Here’s two potential work-arounds if you’re not satisfied:
1. Let’s say you want to set things up so you can see if people have specifically paid for a certain bill, or for a certain month of expenses. You can create a group just for that bill or month – then, when viewing that group, you will only see balances owed from that specific bill or set of bills.
2. Once you pay an amount and want to keep track of it being for a certain bill, you could use…

"Should we buy" feature needed!
You guys should add a feature where a group member can suggest a group purchase and then members of the group can either support, down vote, or propose another item for purchase. When the eventual purchase item is approved the cost is then split amongst the approving members.
17 votesInteresting idea! We’ll definitely bring it up in our next feature-planning meeting :)

Demo
Can you provide a minor demo or a youtube video that will help viewers get a feel of the app without signing up?
Thanks
7 votesGreat idea. We’re planning to roll out a design update to the website in the near future, and we’ll probably put together a demo video sometime after that update has been released.

Recurring expenses with varying costs
Allow users to add recurring expenses that will vary in cost month to month and prompt the user for that months cost.
153 votesUpdating this as it’s been a while. You can currently accomplish this by setting your expense to recur every month and then editing the amount on the expense once it posts.
Apologies that we don’t have a better way of managing this yet!

Bimonthly expenses (i.e. "every other month")
Allow users to post expenses that occur bimonthly (i.e. every other month).
74 votesSeems like a reasonable request! We’ll leave this open for now further voting and comments.

Add expenses via email
It would be killer to be able to email a set email address (ie, bills@splitwise) with a bill name and attachment and have it automatically added as an expense and add the attachment.
83 votesUpdating since it’s been a while. We still really like this idea, unfortunately, there’s not a lot of momentum around it. We also haven’t figured out the best way to implement it yet. We’ll leave it open for now for further voting and comments.

Allow users to 'opt-in' to expenses
For example: if someone buys shared food and puts it out in the apartment, each user should have the option to join the split (but should not be forced to join it by default).
21 votesThis is an interesting idea! We’re already planning to add some features that will make it easier to split things by “shares”, and this could be a good extension of that.
