settle up should be permission based .. if i'm settling one amount then receiver should accept the settlement . otherwise don't allow
Splitwise actually used to work this way, but we got rid of the confirmation step because people complained that it was too much of a hassle.
Our in-between solution was email notifications. By default, you should get an email any time someone says they have paid you, and then if you wish you can double-check that they have actually given you money. (And if they haven’t, then you can delete the payment from Splitwise!) You can also see a full record of changes in your account at any time by going to the “Recent activity” screen.
Hope that makes sense! Let us know if you have questions or concerns.

This can be done based on account setting, if user want his account to get a prompt in case of settlement then it should work that way.

Let's suppose there are two friends A and B... now assume A owes ₹X to B... Now B settles the expense... so just to make cross validation provide facility to user A to validate the settlement... since splitwise are not handling any real money... but this extraa validation will increase trust from customer for splitwise... until A validates the settlement... continue to show the owe and owed for both A and B.

email for an app transaction is not good. atleast there should be mobile notification. though having confirmation will be good.

When someone settle up a transaction then there should be a confirmation prompt for the the personal who is getting before settling up that transaction. When that person accept that he received the money than the transaction should be settled up.

Sometimes the other party settles up without your knowledge of any payment received. Can be problematic if you are not active with phone.

somebody in a group shouldn't be let to settle the due before confirmation from the one to whom it owes or else an admin to authorise the transaction

As of now it's like if the person who owes the money, he can just settle the money without even paying. and its a repeated task of again searching and undo the settlement. instead of this, unless both parties doesn't do the settlement it should not get settled.
