Add friends without email address or phone number
I know that it might be a user acquisition choice, but it is very annoying to not be able to add someone with just their name (i.e. with no email address or phone, so that they don't receive an invite).
I find that the user experience is affected a lot by this and I am switch back to another app because of this despite how good splitwise is overall.
There are indeed several use cases where I would like to add people without contact details:
- At a specific event, for example a party where I need to enter the names of a lot of people without knowing their email adress
- To track my own personal debts with other people without them knowing or them receiving an invitation.
I did read this article by the way, but I wanted to share the way I think:
http://feedback.splitwise.com/knowledgebase/articles/206028-why-do-i-have-to-add-friends-in-order-to-use-split
Thanks for the detailed feedback – it’s always useful to hear, and I’ll pass it on :)
One small feature you may not be aware of: on our website, Splitwise does allow you to add group members without email addresses, which hopefully helps for the “large party” scenario. My apologies that the same feature isn’t available on our mobile apps!

That's the main reason I will not use this app. Too much invasive :/

Whenever I add a friend that owes me money, you guys send them email and (worse) don't make it clear that you are going to do so. So I've gotten an email or two from friends who are pissed I signed them up for something. Because I respect my friends privacy, this makes Splitwise FAR less useful to me.
When adding a new friend who doesn't use Splitwise, there should be a 'do not email this person' option.
Apps that insist on bothering your friends are bad. You guys are good. Please don't be bad. :)

I have a lot of people who I owe sth. or who owe me sth. where I don't know the email address / where the people don't really use email / where the people don't even have email addresses (like my grandparents) - but I still would like to keep track of the expenses and repayments we make.
My current workaround is to enter sth. like blub@blub.blub as email address in order to add "friends without email". Although this works fine (as far as I always enter another dummy email like blub2@blub.blub, blub3@blub.blub...) but I think it's not hard to make the email entry process optional which would add this functionality more nicely.

Sometimes it would be very convenient to split expenses with people who aren't registered users, and occasionally one doesn't even have an e-mail address to connect to. It would then be very convenient to split the expense with just a name (or other text string). Similar to Facebook's feature that allows users to tag pictures and write whatever text string they wish; it doesn't have to be a registered user.
