  1. Spliting expense per day basis.

We have been using Splitwise for quite a while now. This is the situation that we have to deal with:
One of out roommate has a job where he has to travel so often and usually he just stays 3 days a week at home.
Now, portion of the rent is clear: pay whatever the share is.
But for other shared expenses like groceries, utilities we account him for the number of days he stayed.
Which lead us to formula: calculate one day amount for all shared expenses total monthly expense and dived ( no days one stayed * expense…

We have added expense by shares in the website interface, so you could now split your utilities by shares for each day you are in the apartment.

We will not be adding admin or locking controls to the group, though you can register for emails on expense changes in your account settings if you are worried about housemates cause issues with this. We also track deletions.

  4. not link photos to gravatar

    Unable to upload picture.

    1. Start on Account Settings page
    2. Under photo, Select Browse
    3. Navigate to photo of your liking
    4. Select Open
    5. Note that image link is in box, but the button that is available still says browse.

Expected: new photo is updated or the option says "save/upload"

Actual: nothing happens... if you click on image it keeps bringing you to a signup service for gravatar.

Comments: Honestly, I don't want to signup for another thing. Thanks...

  6. Add some text to the UI buttons

This site uses too much mystery meat navigation. Please add some text to the interface buttons, so I can know what will happen if I click them, without having to guess at the meaning of an icon or look at the address in the status bar. If this muddies your design, at the very least you should display tooltips when hovering above UI elements.

  8. Consolidate one-on-one debts with group debts

My friend owed me some money from our apartment group, as well as some "one-on-one" debt that came over from a BillMonk import. He paid me back for both at once. After entering the payment, it said that he still owed me 148.09 in the group, and I owed him 148.09 in one-on-one debt. I had to add two extra payments of 148.09 to zero it out. This seems like it could be much more streamlined.

We are planning to make this better in the next big update, but for the moment, if you go to your friend expense list of the website, you can click on the gear next to their name and consolidate debts from that menu until we get the better solution in place.

On the web, if you have too many friends to list in the left-hand sidebar (10+), you can search for a specific friend by typing in the search box at the top of the list.

  10. Allow existing users to sync with a facebook account

Once I have an account, there is no way to add a facebook account to it. This would make it easier for people with many accounts...I always click the "sign in with facebook" button, and THEN remember that this isn't a site I joined via facebook. Because your invites don't give that as an option, I bet there are a lot of users in my boat.

  11. I'd like to be able to create a recurring expense monthly

If I know that I owe rent every month, and its a fixed amount that has the split already figured out, I'd like to just create a date on which the payment is due. For eg. I split the mortgage with my gf, and my share is $500 biweekly. If I define the starting date, then that expense should be added every 2 weeks automatically as what I owe my gf

We do have monthly expenses on the website. You can set how frequently an expense occurs in the left window of the create expense form. Is this a request for this feature on the mobile site?

You can already add expenses or payments for the future – just change the date when adding items to Splitwise. They’ll show up in your list of expenses immediately, and be included in your total balance. (We don’t plan to support “pending” future expenses that don’t apply to your total balance, as we think that makes it more difficult to understand at a glance why you owe the amount that you owe.)

  15. All Expenses Page Improvements

First : i really appreciate the services you provide for free and the site is amazing :)

It would be nice if you can display the total ( from all friends etc ) i owe and someone owes me when i visit the All Expenses Page.

When i visit the All Expenses page,
    1. At the top let me see my status ( how much i owe and how much others owe me totally )
    2. For each friend category, display the same information - currently i can see only the list and no totals

  17. Seperate dates for Bill date and entered date

Need to have a field for Bill date and another one for Date the bill is entered. Otherwise anyone entering an expense can bury an expense in older expenses by putting a really old date on the bill.

We actually do this already – we keep track of when a bill was added to our system, separately from the date that is given for the bill. If you’d like to see a list of recent updates to your account, you can visit https://secure.splitwise.com/#/history, and you’ll see a list of all changes in chronological order (ordered by the date they were added).

  18. that there should be a free text to enter comments

Having a free text to enter comments helps to keep a record like what item cost how much or some basic calculation done before punching bill to save time and unncessary number of iteration

Hey Viresh – you can already include a note with any expense you add, by entering text into the Notes field. That field is designed so that you can include comments or extra information about a bill.

Hope that helps – let me know if I’ve misunderstood your suggestion!

  19. Can't add a pending bill

At the moment you can only add a bill or expense that someone has already paid- what about when you receive a bill that needs paying in the immediate future? You should be able to add this so you can see which bills are scheduled to be paid and who owes what.

You can already add bills and expenses that are dated to the future – just change the date in the “add bill” form when adding your bill. The “future” bill will be included in your balances immediately, and you’ll be able to see who owes who for that particular expense.

We’ve also thought about an option for future bills that /aren’t/ included in your balance immediately, but decided that it’s an unnecessary feature for most users and would make Splitwise a bit too confusing. If that’s what you were looking for, we’re sorry!

  20. Add a bill you owe someone else

My roommates are usually too lazy to use Splitwise. I would like to be able to record their bills so that I know how much I owe them.

    Hi Eric,

This should be possible already – you can change who paid for the bill:

    - on the web: click on the link in “Paid by YOU
    - iPhone/Android by tapping on the name at the top of the form that says “XXX paid”

And if you want to add bills between two roommates that are not you, this is also possible in the context of a group. If you’re confused on how to do this, I guess email support@splitwise.com?

    Best,
    Jon
