We’ve discussed this kind of calculator internally a couple of times and haven’t yet figured out how costs should be broken down in a fair way. This would be nice to have, but I doubt we’ll have time to work on this in the near future. We’re a small team, so picking priorities is important :)

I have a car (recently fully paid off) that my live-in partner borrows frequently. We generally split gas expenses, although if he uses my car for a longer day trip or something he will pay the full expense of any gas on that trip. However, this doesn't account for the fact that he has access to a car and the convenience of one and the de facto lifestyle of a car owner without having paid for one. If he didn't have it, he may have to rent or do car share occasionally, or may even think about buying a car. It didn't cost extra to add him onto my insurance (if it did he would've paid the difference) so I don't feel that addressing the fairness aspect through insurance help makes sense because if he didn't use my car I would still be paying the full insurance. I would love others' thoughts on how to address fairness. Is splitting gas enough?
