I agree that this is a real pain point with using Splitwise for any kind of group activity, and a feature improvement in this area would be awesome. I think managing it at the individual level makes a lot of sense. You could also have a concept of the Group creator or admin "locking" and "unlocking" the settle up feature, with the idea being that they are aware (based on the presumed parallel text/email chain) when all expenses are in. Please consider this one!

Thanks. I hear you. We’re hesitant to create a ‘staging site’ for bills because we think that may cause a lot of confusion — you’d have to remember which bills you had actually added versus ones you’d only partially added. You’d have to remember to revisit the app to actually submit expenses. We’re aware of the need and will keep thinking through how to best let you store info without necessarily pinging your friends. Cheers!

I would like to cast a strong vote for this idea as well (although I seem to be blocked from actually doing so - is it because the Idea is already Under Review?) I would definitely use this feature a lot, as it is very common I want to add something to Splitwise so that I remember to add the final amount and other details later, but don't care to do that in the moment of the transaction. One scenario where this would be especially helpful is when traveling abroad and paying for things with my credit card. I'd rather make a note that I paid for a dinner or other expense, and later input the amount based on the actual USD cost that hits my credit card statement. It's impossible to know exactly what this will be in the moment, and there's not much point to tracking the foreign currency cost that could be known at the time because ultimately it's only the amount that hits my card that really matters as a source of truth. In general I also usually don't care to log expenses like dinner (even in the US) in the moment with all the details and would prefer to make a quick note of it with the amount "to be added". Sometimes this is because I don't leave with a receipt of what I tipped, and prefer to use the final tip amount that appears on my card bill.
Without this feature and because of how I use your product, I end up spending a lot of time reviewing my credit card statements every month or two to make sure I didn't "miss" any household expenses. It's also common that in the midst of a group trip, you simply want to make a note of having picked up an expense and deal with the details later.
Also, I don't really think the concerns Zoe raised in this reply are sufficient reasons not to move forward with this feature - you could simply block any "settle up" until all amounts are entered, and that could be shown clearly in the product. I don't see an issue with "having to remember to revisit the app to actually submit expenses" - for people that use this feature, that would be the whole point.
Please consider adding this! Happy to talk with the team for user research as well if interested.
