Thanks for the suggestion – I can see how that would be useful! Our travel calculator (http://splitwise.com/calculators/travel) does something like this, so it is a problem we’ve thought about before, though not exactly in this way. I’ll pass on your idea and add it to our list of possible future updates.

Hey there, first off, I love splitwise and the research you put into it. I use it all the time and it's helped roommates and I stay friends after dealing with money!
I would love to suggest and see a function for splitting utilities and/or rent based on actual days occupying a property.
For instance, I work for the airlines and I'm usually gone 14-18 days out of the month. In a scenario where a roommate is constantly gone like that, what's the fairest way to split things up?
I find the "shares" function can work but can be inefficient at some things. For instance, what if I'm gone 16 days out of the month, but my roommate works from home... How should my part of the utilities be calculated? Or, what if my roommate excessively uses other utilities while I'm away, why should I be paying a flat rate when obviously my consumption is less?
A tool like this would be very helpful to the airline community that travel for work and consistently have issues dividing up rent and utilities when living with non-airline roommates.
Also, it would also be great to factor in splitting up costs when a roommate works from home and is home almost 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
Thanks for your help!
