Reverse Bills
Sometimes I EARN money, and I owe that money to my 3 roommates.
A bill is when they OWE ME money. A Reverse bill is when I OWE THEM money.
You can solve this by letting us do a negative amount for a bill. Thanks!
Our website now has additional handling for reverse bills/refunds – when entering a bill, you now have the option to choose “reimbursement” as a split type, which will allow you to distribute money equally between a number of people. (If you try to enter a negative cost in the “Add bill” form, it will now automatically change to the new “reimbursement” split method.)
We’d love to add this kind of bill to our mobile apps as well, but it’s not on the roadmap yet. Apologies for the inconvenience!
Hope that helps! Let us know if you encounter any bugs, or if you have any other suggestions.

It would be nice to have a way to add common income. some times a househood has common income like a Airbnb, that would balance the debts between the people in that group.

This feature doesn't work I think. Try it and it always saves as an expense instead of a reimbursement.

For example apartment:
We are selling our table, or say we do a group thing which entails an external party (not on split wise) giving us an amount for the group. However, only one person receives the payment. So add a function that allows external payments to be added into settlements and whatnot? Ie: I recieved $15 for the table from external party, now I owe $5 to member 2 and $5 to member 3, but this payment is not "from" me, it's from an external party. So basically I feel the only way to settle is to input that 1 paid 2, but what if that amount is already suppose to be member 2's because it was a group sale or group income?

Please add this functionality to the mobile app! I really do find myself needing to add a "credit" to the group fairly often.

I agree with Carl. Could you please give us the functionality to split reimbursements unequally? This would be really useful for things like unequal bond repayments, etc.

Hi! Thanks for the update. Just to check: the "reimbursement" split seems to insist on an equal split: is this correct, or is there a way of setting a different one? If this is the only option for the moment, what're the chances of supporting the other split methods (shares, percentages etc.) for income?

Agree this'd be useful.
I tried to enter a negative value for house income and found that it didn't let me set it as "paid" (i.e. paid to) anyone but me, but that the splits I entered did take effect.
For the moment, I think negative input should either give an error message or allow changing the payee…

While you can enter negative amounts on the website, they're not handled properly. If you enter a negative amount, you cannot specify any way to split the bill. At least not after saving it and editing it again; the "Choose how to split the cost" window is empty. It seems to work only upon first entry, but it is always "paid" by the owner of the group. Also, the overview says it is paid by 0 people.
So other than negative amounts being ugly, this doesn't work properly.
There is a good use for it when handling holidays and house bills in the Netherlands and Germany: we've got deposits on bottles. If I buy a few bottles of beer, and John buys a few more, we both pay the deposits. Then if Jack returns the bottles, he gets the deposits back. I don't see how I can handle this with the current Splitwise.
Other than that, it's a great service!

Ah, I see. I'm pretty sure we have a similar idea in here. I'm going to merge the two ideas, but let me know if the one I merge into doesn't sound like the feature you want.
Thanks for following up!

Now, you can only record a cash payment 1 person to another one (1-->1). It would be great having the opportunity to record a N-->N or N-->1 cash payment (like when you input a shared bill, where you can choose multiple payers).
Thanks for your patience.

Hi Frederico,
How would this be different from person A, B and C recording payments to person D? Can you give a specific example of a bill or expense you would use this for?

It's like when a person A (or more people) lend a certain amount of money to another person B (or more people).
Example: Group of 4 people: A, B, C, D. Three of them (A, B, C) make a bank transfer in favor of the person D. It would be a nice having the ability to record that operation.

Not sure how to edit this, but you CAN do negative payments on desktop. My feature request would be to enable this on mobile. Thanks!

Maybe your stance has changed as I've been able to add negative expenses on the web. This feature should be available on the mobile apps as well. Bottle returns, refunds, exchanges etc are good applications.
Keep up the good work. I recommend splitwise to people all the time.
