"Shared Expense"
Rather than separating bills only by who "paid" it would be helpful to also have a function that was titles a "shared expense" where it's more of the idea of pooling the money rather than paying back an individual. It's mostly just a matter of wording that would help for clarification in certain situations. Thank you :)
3 votesHi Kendra,
Can you give us an example of what a “shared expense” would be?

Thanks for your feedback!
Our solution to messaging is expense-based commenting:
As of December 2013, you can add comments to any expense from the web app. An email alert will be sent to everyone on that expense with the content of your comment.

Upcoming bills
Have a spot for upcoming bills that will be due. With reminders.
3 votesHey Kyle!
You can set any bill (ie rent) to reoccur. When you do, you’ll have the option to set an email reminder for the reoccurring bill.
Hope this helps!

Allow a printable or exportable summary of Group Balances
I need to be able to export group balances to email directly to everyone via email since not everyone can pay via Paypal. I can do screen grabs, but it'd be easier to have a table to copy and paste or an easy export feature.
3 votesHi Greg, Have you tried clicking on “View printable summary” on our website? It will appear in the month header on every group. I don’t think we have this feature for mobile apps yet, but it does exist in some form. I hope this helps!

Update: the Android 4.0 update finally adds material design to our interface!
I’d definitely love to update the app to material design when we get a chance! We’re a very small team (only 2 engineers), so it might take us a while, but hopefully it’ll be worth the wait.

Have possibility to settle up anytime
Hi,
Consider such scenario - we agree with friends that we will order food, orderer will create bill in future, but I want to pay (settle up) in advance. Currently there are 2 ways of improvement which will allow me paying in advance:
1. (very small fix) Remove notification which blocks settle up when you are already settled up with someone,
2. (a little bigger) Allow to settle up in group and choose who pays whom.3 votesUpdate: you can now enter a payment with anyone in a group by going to settle up and clicking on more options at the bottom. To add a payment with any friend, you will need to use the non-group expenses entry in the groups list and settle up from there.
Hey Piotr, thanks for the suggestion! That definitely makes sense, and I know we’ve wanted to add that feature for a while – you can already do it from our website, just not from our mobile apps. Hopefully we’ll have time to add the feature to our mobile apps soon. In the meantime, sorry for the inconvenience!

Add more currency options
I was living in USA And I loved this app. Now I am living in India i would help if you add more currency options in the app.
3 votesHey Hiren – we actually support a wide variety of currencies already, including INR! You can change the currency when adding a bill by clicking on the currency symbol next to the cost field, or you can change your default currency for all future bills from your account settings page. Hope that helps!

Pin group on the dashboard
When I am on a trip, I am always adding expenses on a particular group.
Similarly at home, I am mostly using a particular group. To add an expense, I have to first open the app > open side bar > scroll to that group and select it > then click add expense
Add an option to pin a group on the dashboard to to quickly go to that group and add expense to that group.
3 votesUpdate: on both mobile platforms we now have a top level group list and hide groups that have been settled up for a while. Hopefully this will make it easier to go to the group before adding an expense.
Thanks for the suggestion! I definitely understand your problem – we’re actually working on some design changes to our app to make it easier to get to your groups quickly. Hopefully those updates will come out soon, but in the meantime, apologies for the inconvenience!

Show only non-zero balance names on homepage
This one I'm writing only keeping iOS app in mind as I'm not sure other mobile OS's app.
Please provide a feature to not show to settled up contacts on splitwise home page.
3 votesThe current version of the iPhone app hides names that have been settled up for more thanks 40 days.

Update: This is now available on iPhone and Android!
Thanks for the suggestion! We’re actually working on adding CSV export to our iPhone app right now, and we hope to bring the same feature to Android at some point in the future. For now, you can also export a group’s expenses to a CSV at any time from our website – just go to your group, click the settings button at the top of the right sidebar, and choose “Export as spreadsheet”. Hope that helps!

Swiping Between Tabs
See https://developer.android.com/design/patterns/swipe-views.html#between-tabs - right now, tabbed views can only be navigated by pressing the header for that tab.
3 votesUpdate: this is finally available with the 4.0 release for Android! Enjoy!
Thanks for the suggestion! I know this is an Android convention, so hopefully we can add support for it in a future update.

Keep track of pennies
This may be a bit pedantic, but the splitting should keep track of remainder pennies across expenses and itemized bills within, to keep it more fair. For instance, if you have an itemized bill with multiple charges of 0.99, and split between two people, in each item, whoever's first pays the extra penny (0.50 / 0.49). This means that if you have a lot of these expenses in one bill (e.g. 99p Stores here in the UK), the bill gets more and more unevenly split based on nothing but alphabetical order of the splittees' names.
3 votesUpdate: all of our apps should now redistribute pennies randomly. Tracking pennies is fairly complicated and unlikely to be much better than random distribution.
Sorry for the trouble! The way we split pennies is a bit inconsistent based on which version of our app you’re using, but we do generally try to be fair, usually by distributing the extra pennies randomly. This is definitely somewhere we want to keep improving – for now, apologies for the inconvenience!

Access to Google and FB contacts
I love what you've created! I've been looking for something like this for years, literally - including crafting my own simple application for similar purposes (other apps didn't have "multiple people paid" options etc.). Your app is something that finally meets all my expectations. Keep up the good work!
The only thing that annoys me is that I don't get auto-suggestions when entering my friends' emails. Sync with GMail and Facebook contacts would be great!
3 votesIf you go to your account settings on web, you can connect your Google account to your Splitwise account and we will pull contacts for inviting friends from there. We do not currently plan to support Facebook friends at this time.

Allow us to pay back expenses individually for a person
When I have an expense from someone that's like "$1000 rent" and then "$10 food", I would be able to pay the food first and then rent later. But splitwise only allows me to pay of the $1100 at once, without separate payments.
3 votesSorry for the confusion, but good news: you can record a partial repayment.
Click ‘settle up’. We pre-fill the payment field with your total balance, but you are welcome to edit it before saving to reflect that you repaid a different amount.
Cheers, Zoe

Ability to input multiple items into an expense.
When picking out items from a grocery list receipt, it's not feasible to input each item as separate expense. I an forced to sum all applicable items from my receipt outside if split wise and then input the total into the expense. It would be nice if I could add subitems into an expense which will calculate the the total for me automatically.
It would be even nicer if you could optionally name the subitems in order to remember what they are.
3 votesWe have itemized bill on the website which accomplishes this. The interface is a little too complex for us to be able to bring this to mobile anytime soon.

Show the total balance amount for each person
For each person, instead of showing as "asterisk" next to the amount, the app should display to total amount to be paid/received. And you can then show the breakdown when you click that person's field.
In short, show the total amount to be paid/received instead of displaying an "asterisk".
3 votesUpdate: our mobile apps now show all balances for a person or group instead of just the default.
Can you explain in more detail what you mean by displaying “the total amount”? In general, we only display an asterisk(*) if a user has balances in multiple different currencies. Would you prefer us to automatically convert all those currencies into one currency, and show the converted total balance?

Hide a transaction from a friend
I was thinking of a feature where you can hide a transaction in a group from a friend so that they will not be aware of the transactions and costs. For e.g., surprise birthday party expenses.
So, I am talking about making the transactions not visible to a person who is not involved in the transaction. It would be a good feature otherwise as well.3 votesThanks for the suggestion! The best way to hide a specific expense is to add it as a “non-group” expense – that way, only the people directly involved in the bill will be able to see it. You can make any bill a “non-group” bill just by changing the group to “No group” in the “Add bill” form.
Unfortunately, I don’t think we’re likely to add a feature to hide an individual expense that belongs to a group, as it’d add a lot of complexity that could confuse people. (For example, a hidden expense would probably still change the group’s balances, and that would mean we’d have to show DIFFERENT balances to different group members depending on whether or not they could see the “hidden” bill.) Hopefully the non-group expense solution helps you out!

Indirect settlement
Related to my earlier post: http://feedback.splitwise.com/forums/162446-general/suggestions/10304280-3-way-or-multiple-way-settlement
If Alice owes Bob, and Bob owes Carl, then there must be a way in which Bob can make an entry in SplitWise to link Alice and Carl (assuming they're known to each other) so Alice can directly pay Carl.
Please add a way to have SplitWise calculate multiple-way settlements, and provide options for indirect settlement.
3 votesThis feature already exists on Splitwise within a group.
If Alice, Bob and Carl are in a group on Splitwise, and you turn on the ‘Simplify Debts’ option in the group settings, Splitwise will do exactly what you mentioned, it will transfer debts around to ensure that a minimum number of payments have to be made to settle up.
