Thanks. I hear you. We’re hesitant to create a ‘staging site’ for bills because we think that may cause a lot of confusion — you’d have to remember which bills you had actually added versus ones you’d only partially added. You’d have to remember to revisit the app to actually submit expenses. We’re aware of the need and will keep thinking through how to best let you store info without necessarily pinging your friends. An error occurred while saving the comment Tommy Smith commentedSometimes I need to post an estimated expense so everyone has an Idea of the cost, but also knows that it's not exact yet. If people don't realize things haven't been reconciled or completed they my pay an incorrect amount prematurely.
Example: Goup goes to Dinner, One person pays but hasn't had the time to brake out the individual cost. "Estimated" can be a soft total and spread equally. "Expense Complete" lets everyone know it should be correct.
Please add and "Estimated" feature which is in a different color to notify the group it is an open item. as well as a "Trip Complete" or "Month Closed out" so everyone knows the calculations are complete for the trip.

Thanks for the suggestion! I totally understand this use case – “don’t settle up until I add everything” is something I’ve heard friends of mine say anecdotally. I’ll add this to our list of possible improvements for future versions :)

One small feature you may not be aware of: on our website, Splitwise does allow you to add group members without email addresses, which hopefully helps for the “large party” scenario. My apologies that the same feature isn’t available on our mobile apps!

We aren’t planing to add support for custom categories in the near future. We’re considering better ways to allow people to sort expenses into categories other than the ones we’ve provided. In the meantime, if there are particular important categories you feel are missing, feel free to email us with a suggestion at support@splitwise.com.

People get an email or text every time there is a change. Half the people in my group (especially the Trip coordinator) don't want to use it because people are getting inundated with messages. Please set up the (default) alerts so that you DO NOT have to turn them off. Once people sign on they should be given the option of what notifications they want to turn on. they should not have to search for the setting to turn it off.
