A workaround to possibly track an unpaid bill, is to add a user/member to the group called "Unpaid". Then set the paid by to that member ("Unpaid"), but assign no split/share/items to it - its effectively an entity who lend the money to the entire group in the future.

Then it can be settled in a few ways:
1) One real person paid that particular bill, then that person pays "Unpaid" the whole amount, and with Simplify Debts ON, it will show you how much everyone else needs to pay that person (or Edit Expense to set it to be paid by that person)
2) If everyone actually paid their share of that individual bill, then you Edit Expense and set the payer from "Unpaid" to Multiple, and there is nothing owing on that bill. (Or record payments from the person to "Unpaid")

Need an unpaid bill option! Probably won't continue with this app without that. Makes it hard to track the splitting of bills with roommates when one has already paid their share and the others have not. Need to be able to subtract from bill amount/have remaining unpaid balance.

Maddening that splitwise doesn't have this feature. Four of us sharing a house and not one bill is paid for in whole by one of us. We all pay our share into the bill not to each other. So we get an unpaid bill it gets put into splitwise and then we all pay our share. MAKE THIS AN OPTION!

It would be great to record an expense which is in the list but it's not taken into account for balancing.
Let's say you plan a vacation and you want to record all the ongoing expenses but the expense is not yet debited from the account yet. So you could check for unpaid and change the checkbox when the account is debited.

When I go to add bill, it assumes that I've already paid for it?. Am I able to add a bill that is unpaid and then split it with the housemates? We are at most times, unable to take on the whole payment of bill and so this app would work well for our household if it allowed unpaid bills to be evenly split without assuming someone has paid for the whole thing.

Am I able to add a bill that hasn't been paid by myself or anyone in the house yet? Just seeing what the updated answer to this is for July 2019. Really what Im looking for in a bill-split app is to keep a record of all the bills that can be accessible and paid for when we have the money to do so.
Its just that not all bills are able to be paid for immediately by myself or other housemates.

I agree this would be a good feature. Our house all pays into an account that pays the bill so it doesn't make sense for me to put that I've paid it and they owe me. So to be able to add unpaid or a dummy user we could name house acc. that we owe would be ideal

Also googled this and ended up here. Would love to see the ability to add an unpaid bill we plan to split. Right now it's too clunky: I have paid $X (but actually haven't yet) and you owe me half (even though you don't). Or other odd etc's.

Would be great if you could post a bill as unpaid so it shows as owed from all parties to a third party instead of paid by one participant and owed by another

Searched on google, and ended up on this thread. This is 'needed' in the sense that it will enhance the value of splitwise to me. We add unpaid bills, someone pays it, and then claims it.

Please please please add this.

I need this ability. There are three of us in the house. We must pool money to pay our bills because they are too much for any one of us to front the cost. What I need from split wise is a feature that allows me to post bills once they are received, so that my roommates will know what to contribute and by what date. Without this feature, split wise really does not help us much.

Please add this feature, it is entirely useless without.

I would also like to see this. My housemates are confused because it constantly says they owe money even though the bill isn't due for 2 months. I don't go and pay for everything and THEN collect from them. I need them to pay me before the bill gets paid.

Agreed, this is why I downloaded this app... I did as suggested, making a "Services" account to our little group, but it is annoying... I feel like it would be an easy fix to allow the bill to be paid "zero" so we can owe.

The added bill notification tends to be quite confusing. I suggest adding the total balance with whoever added the bill as alongside the amount owed from the bill itself

Yea this is the only reason I downloaded as well. Essentially need to track who has paid utilities and who has not
