Great idea! To be honest, it’s a lot of extra work to create a custom user-by-user system (maybe a good idea for the Pro version?), so that’s not likely in the near term. But if you have suggestions for words to add, please feel to email us at support@splitwise.com or add them to the comments. We also review the system periodically and add new “magic” words when we think of ones to add.

Are you looking for an item-by-item list, or a summary by category? If you’re looking for the latter, there’s a category breakdown chart you can use on our website – click the “Trends” button at the top of the right-hand sidebar, then click “view full charts” at the bottom of the sidebar. I’ll pass on the suggestion for a way to break things down by category. Hopefully we can add these features to our mobile apps in future updates!

Thanks for the suggestion! Our website currently has a few more advanced charts and graphs (totals by category, printable monthly summaries), and our iPhone app has a few basic charts as of v4.0 (group totals, export as spreadsheet). We’re hoping to bring similar features to Android soon, and to add more features as time goes on :)

Are you aware of the ability to send reminders, or comment on specific expenses? You can send an email to a fellow group member by clicking on their name in the right sidebar, then clicking the “Send reminder” button. You can leave comments on specific expenses by clicking the expense, then entering a comment in the comment box – the other people involved in the bill should get an email about your comment. I hope that helps!

Thanks for the suggestion! Yep, this definitely makes sense – right now, we auto-detect certain words like “dinner”, but we don’t do any intelligent matching based on your past expenses. I’m not sure how technically involved this would be, but I’ll add it to our list of possible improvements for the future :)

We aren’t planing to add support for custom categories in the near future. We’re considering better ways to allow people to sort expenses into categories other than the ones we’ve provided. In the meantime, if there are particular important categories you feel are missing, feel free to email us with a suggestion at support@splitwise.com.

I think that this app should have the option to just select the categorie when adding a expense. There is no need for a description of every expense that is added.
