  1. Average balance of a user

Add a stat which shows a user's average balance. This will actually imply monetary behaviour of a user over a period of time (and hence his generosity or lack of it). It's an easy to implement and yet cool feature.

Interesting idea! We definitely like encouraging people to be responsible about paying each other back :) We’ve also considered a graph of your total balance over time, which would accomplish some similar things. We’re a bit tied up with Android work at the moment, but I’ll add this to our list of possible future improvements.

  2. Delayed Viewing

It would be really cool if the monthly reoccurring bills could have a delayed notification. For instance, if I put in a bill due on Oct 10 (reoccurring) it would actually show up as a transaction for the involved parties on Oct 3 (one week early, or any set time). That way it doesn't say my roommates owe me for a bill due over a month away. Thanks, great app!

Thanks for the suggestion! I’ll pass it on to the team at our next meeting.

For now, you can sort of do this already for future copies of recurring bills. When adding a recurring bill, you have the option to set a “Reminder” period (e.g. “Remind me one week in advance”). When Splitwise sends out the reminder for the next bill, it’ll add that bill to Splitwise at the same time. As a result, your next bill will be posted exactly a week in advance (or whatever time period you choose). Hope that helps!

  3. Make app less US-centric

It would be great if the categories used were less US-centric. This is not just about specific words used (e.g. Trash vs. Rubbish/Garbage), but also about typical practices. For instance, in the UK, rubbish (trash) is usually collected by the local council, which also supplies other services (e.g. street cleaning) and charges a fixed amount of Council Tax based on house size. So really UK users could do with having a "Council Tax" category (pretty much everyone in the UK pays this).

I’ll pass this on! The vast majority of our users are from the US, so we’ll probably always be a bit US-centric, but we’ll try to make things a bit more tailored for other countries as well.

  4. Entire and monthly export option

There should be an option to export the entire transactions of an account for a particular month.

  5. enable a user that he can export a list of expenses as PDF

As a user I want to be able to export my expenses (all expenses, only expenses with a certain person or [especially] expenses from one trip) as a PDF file so that I can use this PDF as base for settling up with others (especially after a trip).
For me as a user this really helps me to have a kind of "proof" that someone ows me money. Especially for trips where I suggest friends to use splitwise the first time, they might not be fully convinved yet and want to calculate on their own if the costs on splitwise…

Makes sense! We actually have an export-to-spreadsheet for individual friends and groups already (on web only). If you click the settings/gear icon at the top of the right-hand column, you should see an option to “Export as spreadsheet”.

We’d definitely like to add a better, more human-readable version in the future, either as a PDF or just a printable webpage. Right now we’re more focused on Android and a few other things, but hopefully we’ll get around to it before too long!

  6. Overpay&Split

    Scenario:
4 friends chipping in money to buy say beer. They don't know yet how much it will cost. A pays $40, B pays 10, C pays 20 and D pays nothing. B goes with 70 bucks and ends up buying a case of beer for 60 bucks. How can they split equally using the app?

If you've had this scenario in the past, vote for this!

  7. Show today's balances

It would be nice to have the option to show the money owed in current day. As an example, I have a 1:1 group and there are some upcoming bills, and it only shows up the total owed money including those bills. I want to have the possibility to see how much do I owe (or get back) today, including only the bills already paid.

  8. Taxable items in itemized view

    Hi,

Hey guys... love the work you are doing..
It would be great if you could add a checkbox in the itemized bill view to select items that are taxable or not. It generally happens when we do shopping for groceries in walmart or target, taxes are not applicable on many items and currently we have to manually calculate the tax with every applicable item; defeating the purpose of the tax field at the bottom.

  9. Allow fixed and percentage splitting

I used to use billmonk and it had an awesome feature which splitwise is lacking. It is the ability to split by fixed amount and percentage.

    eg. Total bill: $38.50

    UserA: $10.30
    UserB: 1/2 of remainder
    UserC: 1/2 of remainder

Of course, if there were more users, it will be 1/3, 1/4 of remainder.
Would be great to see this feature implemented!

    Thanks :)

    Hi Anon,

Thanks for the cool suggestion. Yes, there have been a couple situations where I would have done this myself. Our new Plates app for iPhone can do this for dinner bills, and I’ve certainly found it useful there.

    Cheers,
    Jon

  10. Calendar

a calendar feature that helps a home group keep track of who gets paid when, and when bills are due. To help figure out who will actually pay the bill, and then be owed by the rest of the group.

Thanks Randy! Have you tried using the ‘recurring bill’ feature? Interested to know whether that meets this need, or whether you think we need a calendar function on top of it. Thanks for using Splitwise and writing in!

  11. Should allow sending invites to friends of friends

When I see a transaction of which I am part of, I should be able to directly invite other people in that transaction.

It's probable that I want to add them to another bill but at the moment I have to invite them by their email id's (which might turn out to be different from the one they use for splitwise)

  12. have the option to add users by name only.

I have someone that owes me money that doesn't have an email address! I want to manage her expenses on my side, but I would like to do it through splitwise. It keeps everything in one place.

We’ve been considering allowing friends without email addresses, though we haven’t yet come to a decision. For now, you could try creating a group with this person in it (groups allow names without email addresses), or adding the person with a variation on your own Gmail address (e.g. shawn+your.friend@gmail.com). Gmail ignores everything after the “+”, and those messages will end up forwarded to your own Gmail account.

  13. New Product Suggestion - Bank Ledger

I love your platform. You should totally add the ability to allow people to use splitwise as a bank ledger. Essentially it would be the same as your current product save for the other entity in the "group" would be a bank instead of another person.

Thanks for the suggestion! We’d definitely like to include better bank support in the future, though it’ll probably take us a long time to do any actual bank integrations. For now, you could try creating a group, with yourself and one other member called “Bank”, and keep track of a ledger that way…it’s a bit messy, but could be worth a try!

  14. Debt Balancing

Debt simplification is awesome, but can get out of hand when people don't pay back their debts as the money can end up getting funneled to one person.

    For example:
In our situation we have a group for our apartment. We take advantage of splitwise so that people can easily buy things for other people and know its covered. We also have a recurring payment for rent which is paid by to one person (A) who then pays the bill itself. At the end of each month if everyone zeros out it's perfect. However if someone (B) comes up short…

We’ve generally been careful not to add more features to debt simplification, since it already confuses a lot of people, but I’ll pass on this suggestion and see what the team thinks. Thanks for the idea!

  15. Dont block users (i.e. make them wait) when saving the current 'card'

When one clicks a 'save' button after entering the expenses, the app syncs the data from the server not in the background but allows the user to wait for the card to disappear, which might take a dozen of seconds to happen on a slow internet connection. I think you might have figured out by now that what needs to be done ;)

Thanks for the suggestion! This definitely makes sense, though I know there are also some technical concerns (such as what to do when saving the expense returns an error). Still, hopefully something we can add in a future update :)

  16. android app for tablet

Recently saw in the promotional mail for "Plates" that the android app will get a much needed update. Will the new app be optimised for Tablets also. I have the current splitwise app on my Nexus 7 tablet and it is a very bad user experience. Any timeline on the new version and tablet optimisation?

  17. Footer when logged in.

On other places in your site I'm able to access the calculators, about page, etc down at the bottom, but when I'm on the dashboard those links are missing. Need consistency. Love the site though overall!

I’ll pass on this feedback! We recently added a link to the calculators on the dashboard (in the right-hand sidebar), but the about page and others are definitely quite hard to find.

  18. Email link should directly go to the expense instead of just the group

The URL should contain an extra parameter for expense, and the user should be highlighted that particular expense to make it easier

  19. Month expense calculator

It would be great if you can just create one column where one can see total amount being spent in a month by all the members related to you or your group. It would be great to see the month analysis, currently the monthly trends shown do not suffice much

  20. add keyboard shortcuts

Keyboard shortcuts are a great way for power users to take full advantage of the web app, and would be especially helpful when batch adding many bills at the same time (eg multiple receipts). Check out the javascript library mousetrap for a quick and easy way to add them.
