Thanks for the detailed feedback – it’s always useful to hear, and I’ll pass it on :)

One small feature you may not be aware of: on our website, Splitwise does allow you to add group members without email addresses, which hopefully helps for the “large party” scenario. My apologies that the same feature isn’t available on our mobile apps!

You can add people to groups without email addresses only on the website.

Thanks Jesse, couldn’t agree more. In fact, I’m up-voting this too :) As the Splitwise team’s big Android fan, I keep having to ask my friends to go download Plates so we can use it. Plates for Android is definitely something we want to do, but we’re juggling a ton of priorities on the core app on both iPhone and Android right now. But for sure it’s on our minds, and thanks for submitting the suggestion!

    Two possible solutions for you:

If you use groups: Have you tried clicking the “view printable summary” link at the top of each month on our website? That link includes a total for each person for JUST that month, so that you can see how much each person spent/owes for a given month.

If you’re splitting all your bills with one other person: The “Trends” tab in the right-hand sidebar also includes a summary of monthly expenses. Click the “Trends” button at the top of the sidebar, then click the “View full charts” link at the bottom of the sidebar. You’ll be able to see your expenses broken down by category, as well as your total balance for the month.

If that doesn’t do what you’re looking for, let me know and I’ll pass on the suggestion.

Hey Ryan – sorry about that, I forgot that the "printable summary" feature only works for groups at the moment. I've updated our answer to include a method for viewing your monthly total with just one other person. Hope that helps!

I can definitely see how that would be useful! We’ve got a bunch of features already on our to-do list, but I’ll pass on the suggestion at our next team meeting and see if we want to add that sometime soon.

Suggestion from User Voice: Splitwise should also remember the category you assigned to an expense description, and auto-select that category as well when it auto-completes the description field.

Totally fair comments here - one of the biggest issues we have is for bills that haven't been paid yet, and reminders on them. It's just hard to make the user interface clear about which bills are included in what totals, and having everything always be included at least makes it clear.

In any case, thanks for your patience while we figure out how to best model this and/or import the bill status from the biller.

An update: we’re still not planning to add the concept of a payment for a specific bill or a specific expense. We’ve left this idea under review for many years, but we’re not convinced it’s the right idea for Splitwise. We think focusing on a total balance makes things simpler in most cases. This is also how a bank balance works.

Here’s two potential work-arounds if you’re not satisfied:

    1. Let’s say you want to set things up so you can see if people have specifically paid for a certain bill, or for a certain month of expenses. You can create a group just for that bill or month – then, when viewing that group, you will only see balances owed from that specific bill or set of bills.

    2. Once you pay an amount and want to keep track of it being for a certain bill, you could use…

    Hi all,

Has the recent web update (Aug 22) hiding balances which have been previously settled improve this for people (on the web)? We agree that it can be confusing to just see a list of all transactions.

(On the mobile apps, we still don't hide transactions past the settle-up point yet, though we plan to.)

We really sympathize with the lines of thinking steve and matt have posted here. You are welcome to extend Splitwise to do what you want using our API (http://dev.splitwise.com), but whenever we whiteboard out the solutions like the ones you are proposing, we see big problems and user interface potential confusions that are hard to solve. The minimal update on Aug 22 relieves a lot of pressure for "why do I owe what i owe" by reducing the list to the set of relevant transactions, and then why I owe what I owe should be more clear.

I'm curious if others feel the same way? Haley K, are you referring to the website or mobile app?

    Cheers,
    Jon

Itemized bill is an option on our website – when adding a bill, click on "split equally" to change the split type, and in the window that pops up, choose the very last split option. That will bring up a screen where you can enter a bill item by item, and include a tax and tip if you wish.

Updating our response since it’s been a long time since the idea was opened. Even though saving the type of unequal split feels like something that would obviously be nice to have (I certainly would use it myself every so often), it requires a change to our data structures, and is therefore a bunch of difficult work to fix, especially since it would need to be fixed separately across iPhone, Android, and web.

If you have a specific use case where not having this feature is really bothering you a lot, please email support@splitwise.com, or comment below to let us know why it’s important to you. The original poster’s meal example is clear and I’m wondering if there are other reasons why it is needed, or any easier way for us to fix it.

In terms of the priorities of our small team, most bills on Splitwise are split…

Thanks Peter! I hear you - great idea, but most users aren't in the UK so it's not a super-high priority yet. But it is something I think would make sense long term.

Hey there! I can’t quite tell from your description – are you trying to add a recurring bill (e.g. a cable bill that’s the same cost every month), or a recurring payment to another Splitwise user (e.g. you pay back your friend $50 every week)? We don’t support recurring payments to friends right now, but we do support recurring bills: just click on the date when adding or editing a bill, and you’ll see options to make that bill recur weekly/monthly/etc. Hope that helps!

I'm happy to say that we're working on that in the very near future!

We have a big site redesign and some other stuff we're wrapping up, and that's one of the next tasks in the queue:)
