Thanks for the detailed feedback – it’s always useful to hear, and I’ll pass it on :)

One small feature you may not be aware of: on our website, Splitwise does allow you to add group members without email addresses, which hopefully helps for the “large party” scenario. My apologies that the same feature isn’t available on our mobile apps!

We aren’t planing to add support for custom categories in the near future. We’re considering better ways to allow people to sort expenses into categories other than the ones we’ve provided. In the meantime, if there are particular important categories you feel are missing, feel free to email us with a suggestion at support@splitwise.com.

Thanks for the suggestion, and sorry for the trouble! We definitely want to make “simplify debts” a bit clearer, though we’ve had trouble successfully doing that. (That’s actually one of the reasons it’s buried in the settings now – some people used to turn it on and off quite frequently, and then OTHER members of their groups would get confused about why their balances were changing.) I like the idea of a temporary toggle, though, to just “preview” what the group would look like the other way. I’ll pass on the feedback and see if we can add it to our list of future updates :)

Very sorry for the trouble! We’ve spent a lot of time thinking about how to explain why you owe what you owe when simplify debts is on, and unfortunately it’s fiendishly difficult (since it often ends up depending on a chain of expenses that goes back for months). Still, we hope we can make some updates in the future that help make it clearer. In the meantime, my apologies for the confusion!

This would be great, even if you just warn folks when they're about to settle a simplified debt.

When we use simplify debts in my group, two of the participants are a couple, and they always try to just pay the full amount they owe each other (they don't really pay anything, they share a bank account). This totally messes up simplify debts as then Splitwise just re-simplifies the debt and they get a balance again.

This is a neat idea! We have “reoccurring bills” but I can see how “duplicate this specific bill once, now” would be a useful functionality to add. We will consider this as we continue to improve Splitwise. Regards

Thanks for the suggestion – I’ll pass it on! For now, my advice would be to create separate groups for the different kinds of debts that you’re tracking, which lets you keep multiple balances with the same person.

I've got a group that we're using to keep track of how my partner and I spend on a particular project, but it's not something we ever intend to pay back. If we ever make a profit on this project, we'd proportionately split the profit by what we put in.

I'd love to have a Splitwise group to keep track of what we're putting in, but I don't want to see it count towards the outstanding balance in all the summary pages. If we could mark a group as "just for tracking" or "just for fun" or something, where it isn't used to calculate overall balances, that would be excellent.
