Thanks for the suggestion! That definitely makes sense as a feature on our apps.

There is already a way to export your receipts, but only on the website (splitwise.com). If you click an expense that has a receipt, and then click on the receipt itself, you’ll notice that the image opens up in a new tab. From there, you can just right click on it to save the image.

  2. Statistical data per category of expense.

Instead of naming the bill, make it so that you choose a category and add a comment. then export statistics per week or month for every kind of categorized expense so that we can have more info on the expenses.

Hey there! We’d love to add better support for categories over time, and we already do support this to some extent. When adding an expense, tap on the expense icon to choose a category for the expense. Later, you can export a spreadsheet that includes category information about all of your expenses.

On our website, you can also view a monthly spending breakdown by category by clicking on the “Trends” button at the top of the right sidebar, then clicking the “View full details” link.

  3. Ability to change group member at any stage...

Kindly add option to change the group member. For example, person "X" with email id "X@yahoo.com" has been added to the group "Alps Trek" and also some expenses has been added in the group with say equal distribution, it should still be possible to add same person "X' with email id "X@gmail.com". Ultimately dropping person "X" "X@yahoo.com" and transferring expenses on her name to same person "X' with email id "X@gmail.com".

Sorry for the trouble! Splitwise allows you to change a person’s email address if they haven’t claimed their account yet, though that may not be clear on mobile (you have to do it by going to that friend’s page and opening the “Friend settings” screen, instead of doing it from the group settings screen). Hopefully we can update our group settings page on mobile soon, so that you can update a person’s email address directly from that screen.

Once the other person has already accepted their invite, you can no longer update their email address, since it’s their account at that point. Hope that helps!

  4. link with walmart/shaws/grocery

Students use splitwise a lot. In their busy schedule its really difficult for them to manually enter bills after group purchases. You can create a system where people can just give in their splitwise id at checkout and they will have the bill available on their app and may be have the items tabulated with option to select who were involved in this product. This involves a lot of work but has a lot of scope. Students might even favor shopping at places that have splitwise support for their groceries. All the data you get about which products people prefer.

Thanks for the suggestion! We’ve thought about a few things like this before – it’s definitely complicated, but it would certainly save our users from manual data entry.

  5. Provide easily accessible info on the differences between memo, note, and comment

In both the web & mobile apps, it would be great if you had a little 'I' in a circle that we could click for more info about a specific feature--specifically I was and still am very confused as to the differences between a Memo, Note, and Comment. Would be helpful if there was a short sentence or two explaining what each feature was for. Thanks for a great app!

Sorry for the confusion! Yep, I agree that all those differences are pretty hard to understand. Hopefully it’s something we can clean up in the future. In brief:

Memo: Basically the same as the “Description” field on a normal expense. When there’s enough room, we try to display this text right in the list of expenses (e.g. “Ryan paid Jon $20 for ‘Groceries’”)

Notes: When adding an expense or a payment, the notes field lets you include extra information about that transaction. (Once upon a time, we didn’t have any ability to add comments at all, and this was the only way to include extra information about a transaction. Now that Splitwise supports comments as well, I think we may phase out the Notes field at some point.)

Comments: This allows anyone involved in an expense to add more information. An expense can have many comments.

  6. Add a Round Up button

It'd be nice to have a Round Up! button. In Malaysia, the smallest amount you can pay is RM0.05, not RM0.01 anymore.

Sorry for the trouble! Yep, there are a few other currencies that work this way too – I’m not sure when we’ll get around to rounding off those currencies, but we know it’s somewhere we can improve. In the meantime, apologies for the inconvenience!

  7. Add an option to select first day of week

Add an option under profile to select the first day of the week: Monday or Sunday.
This option is then taken into account when showing the calendar / date selector.

    Hi there,

Thanks for the suggestion! We always appreciate ideas to make Splitwise better. Having support for a different first day of the week makes complete sense, and is most definitely an interesting suggestion.

Sorry if I misunderstood your request. We don’t have specific plans to translate into Hindi, but we are working on a program to allow volunteers to translate Splitwise into different languages.

Thanks for the suggestion – I’ll pass it on! I know we do something like this for people who only use one group, and I can definitely see how it’d be useful for accounts with only one other person.

  11. Adding more options in the fairness calculator for splitting rent, such as who is sharing what bathroom.

I'm living with 3 friends two which are brothers. One of the brothers has a bathroom in his room who he shares with his brother while he's not sleeping mainly. My room doesn't have a window and is somewhat awkwardly arranged with a door to the outside. The other two rooms are identical. The idea is to basically add more options to describe who's sharing what besides common rooms and such. As of right now I pay $525, roommate 2 pays $608, and brothers pay $633, the older brother having the room with the bathroom for a close total of…

Thanks for the suggestions! We’d really love to update the rent calculator at some point. I’m not sure exactly when it will next get updated, but I’ll add this to our list of possible improvements :)

  12. Offer the choice to receive emails plain text

Your emails are in HTML. This is nice because they look good. However, plain-text emails have their own advantages:

    • they are more suitable to assistive technology
    • they are easier to manipulate by text-based tools

While most people will prefer HTML-based emails, it would be nice to give the choice.

Hey Damien! I believe that we already send all of our emails as multipart emails – that means they contain both an HTML version and a plain text version of the email, which allows your email program to choose which version it wants to display. I’ll pass on a suggestion about adding a user setting to ONLY receive plain text emails, as well.

  13. Integration with Amazon Dash buttons?

My roommate and I both use items that are purchased through my Amazon Prime Dash buttons, it would be nice not to have to keep track of how many times they've been pressed and auto load into splitwise!

  14. Provide a Document Center

I am planning on using Split Wise as a hub for running our apartment.

It would be nice to have a small communal document area to store some of our agreements. As an example, I would like to upload a roommate agreement that was signed by all of the roommates.

Thanks for the suggestion! I think it’s unlikely that we’ll do this – we really want to focus on just the expense sharing problem. If we get a lot of votes here, we’ll reconsider this.

  15. Improve offline mode in iPhone app

Right now, when you add an expense on iPhone when you don't have a working internet connection, the app tries to save the expense for 30 seconds before giving up and adding it later. Please make the app sync expenses in the background instead of making me wait until it gives up to add another expense.

  16. when displaying list of "All expenses" user should be able to know to whom he borrowed/lent

currently the All expenses UI only shows the list of expenses but doesn't show to whom I borrowed/lent. To know this I need to open each expense.

Unfortunately, there’s not usually enough room on the screen to do a good job explaining who you borrowed/lent with in that list. When you’re in a group or friendship, we do break down your lending in that group/friend. I’m not sure how we would put this together in a clean way.

Unfortunately we’ll need to make some technical changes on our backend before we can support 3-decimal currencies, but hopefully this is something we can work on in the future!

  18. Allow marking the expense as posted at financial institution and budget reconciled.

Splitwise can evolve into an expense tracker for shared expenses and individual expenses. It can replace a checkbook register and other means of tracking credit and cash purchases. I currently make a comment on shared expenses that the transaction posted to my financial institution. I then make a comment "transferred" when I move money from my categorized SubAccount (bucket)at my bank. Unfortunately if it is a shared expense the other parties get a nuisance notification when I add these comments. Furthermore I can't tell if I have reconciled the expense on a personal level unless I open each expense and…

  20. Auto-detect category by querying previous expenses

For example, imagine I go to a restaurant called "Alice and Bob".
1st time I add an expense, I type "Alice and Bob" in the Description and select "Dining out" as category.
2nd time, I type "Alice and Bob" the app may select "Dining out" by itself.

Splitwise is still awesome without this feature, but it would definitely be something nice to have!

Thanks for the suggestion! Yep, this definitely makes sense – right now, we auto-detect certain words like “dinner”, but we don’t do any intelligent matching based on your past expenses. I’m not sure how technically involved this would be, but I’ll add it to our list of possible improvements for the future :)
